Opening a corporate bank account in the UAE.
The trade licence takes three to five working days. The bank account can take three weeks, six months, or never happen at all. An estimated 30 to 40 per cent of new corporate account applications in the UAE were rejected or indefinitely delayed in 2025 — and the rate runs considerably higher for certain nationalities, activities and free zone structures.
This is the step that stops more company formations dead than any regulator.
What the compliance officer is actually reading
Not a checklist. A story, and whether it holds together.
Where the wealth came from. Why this person is here. Why this structure rather than a simpler one. Who ultimately controls it. What money will move, from whom, and why. If those answers arrive fragmented — across three documents, two jurisdictions and one long email — the file goes into a queue with no visible end.
Banks are not hostile to newly-arrived businesses. They are simply unable to assume anything. Every gap left by the applicant becomes a question, and each round of questions adds two to three weeks.
Realistic timelines
| Route | Duration |
|---|---|
| Digital banks (Wio, Mashreq NeoBiz) | 1–2 weeks |
| Traditional banks, clean profile | 2–8 weeks from submission |
| DMCC company | 2–4 weeks |
| IFZA, Meydan company | 2–6 weeks |
| Budget or newer free zones | 4–8 weeks or longer |
| Complex structure or higher risk | 4–6 months, or refusal |
| Each additional compliance request | +2–3 weeks |
The seven reasons applications fail
- Activity wording does not match the business. The licence says consultancy; the projected flows look like trading. The most common single cause.
- Opaque or over-engineered ownership. Direct individual shareholding is more bankable than a corporate holding structure in most cases.
- Shareholders from monitored jurisdictions. Enhanced scrutiny or refusal, regardless of the merits.
- No evidence of genuine operations. No contracts, no invoices, no website. Banks look for economic activity, not a paper company.
- Flexi-desk with no signs of real presence.
- Source of funds that cannot be evidenced. Cash and untraceable funds are a terminal rejection reason at every UAE bank.
- Simultaneous applications to several banks. Visible across institutions and read as a warning sign.
Three things that decide the outcome
The relationship manager matters more than the documents
The quality and experience of the RM handling the application has more impact on the outcome than any other single factor. What matters is whether that person has a working relationship with their own compliance team, and whether they know how to present a file that is unusual but sound.
The free zone was chosen before the bank was considered
Banking reception varies enormously between zones and appears in no price comparison. By the time the account is being opened, this decision has already been made — which is why it belongs at the structuring stage, not after.
The source of wealth file is a document, not an explanation
A client arriving in a new jurisdiction has no banker who knows them. There is nobody to vouch for the story. The file has to carry the weight the relationship would normally carry — a letter of introduction to a banker the client has not yet met.
What I do
- Establish the bank's appetite for the profile before any application is made
- Correct what is fixable first: activity wording, ownership complexity, missing evidence of operations
- Build the source of wealth and source of funds file as a coherent narrative with verifiable support
- Route the application to a relationship manager who can carry it internally
- Manage the compliance rounds so each request is answered completely the first time
- Where an application has already failed, diagnose the actual cause before anything is resubmitted

Common questions
How long does it take to open a corporate bank account in the UAE?
Digital banks such as Wio and Mashreq NeoBiz complete onboarding in one to two weeks. Traditional banks — Emirates NBD, ADCB, FAB — take two to eight weeks from document submission. Complex ownership, higher-risk activities or shareholders from monitored jurisdictions extend this to four to six months, or end in refusal.
Why do UAE banks reject corporate account applications?
The most common reasons are a mismatch between the licensed activity and the described business model, an opaque or complex ownership structure, shareholders from high-risk jurisdictions, no evidence of genuine operations such as contracts or invoices, a flexi-desk address without signs of real presence, and source of funds that cannot be evidenced with verifiable statements.
What percentage of applications get rejected?
An estimated 30 to 40 per cent of new corporate account applications were rejected or indefinitely delayed in 2025, with substantially higher rates for certain nationalities, business activities and free zone structures. The trade licence takes days; the account can take months or never happen.
Can I apply to several banks at once to save time?
No. Concurrent applications are visible across banks and read as a red flag. The right approach is to identify the bank whose appetite matches the profile before applying, then submit one complete file.
What is the minimum balance for a UAE corporate account?
Banks expect a relationship balance rather than charging an advertised fee. Depending on the bank segment and assessed risk, this ranges from AED 50,000 to AED 500,000 or more. It is rarely stated upfront.
My application was rejected. Can I reapply?
Yes — a rejection at one bank does not prevent an application elsewhere. But reapplying without understanding the specific reason repeats the outcome. The cause is fixed first: ownership simplified, activity wording corrected, documentation completed, then submission to a bank whose appetite fits.
